PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A half-century tradition rooted in service and local heritage is preparing to take center stage once again in Placerville, as the El Dorado Rose program celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

The annual pageant honors women age 60 and older who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to volunteerism in El Dorado County. Organizers describe the program as both a recognition of service and a living tribute to the county’s Gold Rush-era history.

“This program is about honoring women who have quietly shaped our community for decades,” the El Dorado Rose Corporation said in a public statement. “Their stories reflect the very best of El Dorado County.”

Key Dates Set for 2026 Events

The selection process includes two public events in Placerville:

  • El Dorado Rose Ball: May 16, 2026 — Candidates are formally introduced to the public and judges.

  • El Dorado Rose Pageant: June 18, 2026 — Held during opening night of the El Dorado County Fair at the Imagination Theater, where the winner is announced.

The identity of the Rose is traditionally kept secret until the pageant, adding an element of anticipation to the long-standing community event.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates for the 2026–27 title must meet several criteria:

  • Be at least 60 years old

  • Have lived in El Dorado County for a minimum of 10 years

  • Demonstrate a documented history of volunteer service outside of career obligations

  • Secure sponsorship from a local business, organization, or individual

Applications, along with entry fees, must be submitted by April 1, 2026.

A Living Link to Local History

A defining feature of the El Dorado Rose tradition is its emphasis on historical authenticity. Participants wear period clothing representing the years 1849 to 1910 — a nod to the county’s Gold Rush roots.

To support candidates, the organization maintains a “vintage closet” with historically accurate attire for use during the pageant and throughout the year.

Once selected, the Rose and her court serve as official historical ambassadors, appearing at parades, civic ceremonies, and community events across the county.

How to Apply

Applications can be obtained by contacting the El Dorado Rose Corporation at (530) 845-2513 or by following updates in the Mountain Democrat. Completed materials should be submitted by mail to the organization’s Placerville post office box.

As the program enters its 50th year, organizers say the mission remains unchanged: to spotlight the women whose decades of volunteer work have helped shape El Dorado County’s identity.
