Hiker Rescued After Fall in Remote Canyon Near Coloma

COLOMA, Calif. — A hiker injured in a fall deep within a remote canyon along the South Fork of the American River was rescued Sunday afternoon, March 29, following a complex, multi-agency operation involving air and ground resources.

Authorities said the individual had traveled more than a mile down a rugged trail southeast of Coloma before falling approximately 30 feet down a steep, rocky embankment. The difficult terrain and limited access complicated rescue efforts, prompting a coordinated response from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, and local fire districts.

Drone Technology Aids Rapid Location

First responders utilized a drone operated by the sheriff’s office to locate the injured hiker quickly within the canyon’s dense and uneven landscape. The aerial vantage point allowed crews to assess conditions and plan a safe extraction route.

Helicopter Hoist Required for Extraction

Once ground crews reached the patient and provided initial medical stabilization, a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol—identified as H-24—was deployed. A rescue technician from El Dorado County Fire Station 72 was lowered into the canyon to assist.

The hiker was then hoisted out of the canyon and transported to a nearby ambulance for further care. Officials said the individual is expected to make a full recovery.

Safety Reminder for Outdoor Recreation

Following the rescue, CAL FIRE officials emphasized the importance of backcountry safety, particularly in remote areas where conditions can quickly become hazardous.

“Incidents like this highlight how quickly a hike can turn dangerous,”

CAL FIRE said in a statement.

“We strongly encourage everyone to stay on marked trails, carry basic first aid supplies, and let someone know your plans before heading out.”

The South Fork of the American River region, popular for hiking and recreation, is known for its steep terrain and limited access points, particularly during early spring when trail conditions can be unpredictable.
