El Dorado County, CA — March 11, 2024
In a bid to foster inclusivity and address the unique needs of diverse cultural communities, the Cultural Competency Committee (CCC) in El Dorado County takes center stage. Comprising dedicated county Behavioral Health staff and community members representing a myriad of minority ethnicities, the committee is charged with the crucial task of evaluating and monitoring the delivery and practices of Behavioral Health services.
The backbone of this initiative lies in the Cultural Competence Plan (CCP), a robust framework established under the Department of Mental Health (DMH) Information Notice 10-02, 10-17, and the DMC-ODS Intergovernmental Agreement. These guidelines set the standard for the entire County Mental Health System, encompassing critical aspects such as Medi-Cal services, Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), Substance Abuse Block Grant (SABG), and Realignment.
The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), Behavioral Health Division (BHD), took a pioneering step by formulating its Cultural Competence Plan back in 2010. Since then, the plan undergoes regular updates, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness in meeting the ever-evolving needs of the community. Interested parties can access the comprehensive plans on the official El Dorado County BHD website.
A key aspect of the committee’s modus operandi is the quarterly meetings, scheduled for the second month of each quarter (August, November, February, May). These gatherings, slated for the second Monday of the month at 11:00 A.M., adopt a hybrid format. This approach aligns with the committee’s commitment to embracing modern communication methods while maintaining an inclusive environment for all participants.
As the CCC navigates the intricate landscape of cultural competency in Behavioral Health services, El Dorado County residents can anticipate a more responsive and inclusive system that caters to the diverse needs of the community. The quarterly meetings serve as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and progress, reinforcing the county’s commitment to equitable and culturally competent mental health and substance use disorder services.
