Placerville, CA (Oct 7, 2024) — Jodi Laird, a first-grade teacher at Green Valley Elementary School, has turned her classroom into more than just a place for academic growth—she’s created a space where compassion, responsibility, and service to others come to life. Laird, a long-time volunteer with Guide Dogs for the Blind, has seamlessly integrated her passion for raising guide dogs into her students’ education, leaving a profound impact on both the children and the community.

For years, Laird has raised puppies destined to be guide dogs, and her students have joined her on this unique journey. Through their participation, the children learn to care for the dogs and, more importantly, develop emotional regulation and empathy. “It’s a hands-on experience in nurturing,” Laird said, “and the students learn patience, teamwork, and the importance of helping others.”

Laird’s involvement with Guide Dogs for the Blind began as a family activity with her sons, but it grew into something far greater. Now, with 13 puppies raised under her care, she reflects on how this work has enriched the lives of her students, staff, and the broader Green Valley community. “These puppies are a gift,” Laird remarked. “They teach us so much before they even begin their formal training. The impact they’ve had here is undeniable.”

The program not only provides valuable life lessons for students but also fosters a deep connection within the school. Green Valley’s staff, students, and families have all formed bonds with the puppies, knowing their contribution is part of something much larger—preparing these dogs to change lives. As Jodi says, “Raise a puppy, change a life.”

As the need for guide dogs grows, Laird’s work stands as a testament to how one person’s passion can make a tremendous difference. Her efforts are not only preparing students for their futures but are also shaping a future where they contribute to something bigger, positively impacting individuals with vision loss in El Dorado County and beyond.

In Jodi Laird’s classroom, the lessons go far beyond reading and math. Here, students learn what it means to be responsible, compassionate, and engaged in the world around them.
