El Dorado County (Oct 13, 2024) – The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, owners of Red Hawk Casino, is preparing to finalize their vision for the 301 Capitol Mall site in Downtown Sacramento early next year. Six months after purchasing the high-profile property for $17 million from CalPERS, Tribal Chairwoman Regina Cuellar expressed excitement about the project’s potential in an official statement.

“We plan to finalize our vision and propose a development early next year,” Cuellar said. “We’ll begin collaborating with partners and architects to bring it to life.” While details of the development remain under wraps, Cuellar emphasized that the project will honor the tribe’s heritage while meeting contemporary community needs.

The site, located near Interstate 5 and the Tower Bridge, is considered by city officials as a gateway to the heart of Sacramento. The property has seen various unrealized proposals over the years, but the tribe’s plans could mark a turning point. Despite speculation linking the tribe’s casino affiliation to the possibility of a similar concept, industry experts believe such a development would face significant regulatory hurdles.

In the meantime, the tribe plans to hold a blessing ceremony at 301 Capitol Mall in November to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. This ceremony will mark the first official tribal activity on the site since its purchase.
