The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, in collaboration with the Mother Lode School District, recently hosted a town hall meeting titled “Impact of Vaping on Our Youth.” This event, held on November 2, 2022, at Herbert Green Middle School in Placerville, aimed to address the escalating issue of youth vaping within the community.

Rising Statistics in Youth Vaping

Recent data underscores the urgency of this issue. According to the California Healthy Kids Survey, the percentage of 11th-grade students in El Dorado County who reported ever vaping increased from 32% in 2015 to 44% in 2019—a 38% rise. More alarmingly, current vaping among 11th-graders surged by 155% during the same period, from 11% to 28%.

Community Leaders and Experts Weigh In

The town hall featured insights from key community figures, including District III Supervisor Wendy Thomas, District I Supervisor John Hidahl, and County Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams. Discussions centered on the health risks associated with vaping, particularly nicotine addiction among adolescents, and explored strategies to mitigate youth access to vaping and tobacco products.

Educational Initiatives and Resources

The El Dorado County Office of Education’s Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) program plays a pivotal role in addressing this issue. TUPE focuses on prevention, intervention, and cessation opportunities related to tobacco and marijuana use among youth

. Additionally, the county’s Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) supports tobacco-free environments and offers cessation resources through initiatives like Kick It California.

Community Engagement and Future Actions

Supervisor Wendy Thomas emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Our kids are under relentless assault from influences demanding their time, attention, money, participation, and their lives. I know we are all concerned about how we can best protect them from harmful influences, including the insidious pull toward vaping and tobacco usage.” The town hall served as a platform for residents to voice concerns and contribute to developing effective strategies to combat youth vaping.

Your Thoughts

As El Dorado County continues to confront the challenges posed by youth vaping, community input remains invaluable.
