Brock Buak of Union Mine High School has secured appointments to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each of these prestigious institutions requires a congressional nomination and rigorous selection criteria.
Buak, a member of the California Wing’s Eugene L. Carnahan Cadet Squadron 85 since February 2022, has demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, and community service. He serves as the executive officer of the California Cadet Corps and is a former cadet commander for the Placerville-based squadron.
At Union Mine High School, Buak has been an active participant in football, baseball, and wrestling. He was recognized as a 2024 National Wrestling Coaches Association High School Scholar All-American and has held leadership roles as president of both the National Honor Society and the Key Club. By the end of his junior year, he had earned two associate degrees from Sierra College in Rocklin.
Beyond his academic and extracurricular pursuits, Buak contributes to his family’s farm in Shingle Springs, where he helps raise pigs, sheep, chickens, and rabbits. He has also received the honor of being invited to wrestle for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Reflecting on his journey, Buak stated, “The support from my family, mentors, and community has been instrumental in my achievements. I’m honored by these appointments and look forward to serving my country.”
Buak plans to make his final decision on which academy to attend by April, with aspirations to serve as a military officer specializing in either civil engineering or military intelligence.
