By Cris Alarcon, Staff Writer, Placerville, CA (Feb 1, 2025) – Dorine Núñez Ávila, a grieving mother from Pollock Pines, is speaking out against President Donald Trump’s recent pardon of Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind Silk Road, an infamous online black market where her son obtained the drugs that led to his death.

In September 2012, Ávila’s 16-year-old son, Alejandro, was attending a sleepover in Camino when he suffered a fatal overdose from drugs purchased via Silk Road. “Where’s the justice?” Ávila asked, expressing outrage over Ulbricht’s release after serving only part of his life sentence. “My son didn’t get a second chance.”

Alejandro was one of at least six individuals who died from drugs sourced on Silk Road, according to court records. The dark web platform, which facilitated the sale of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other illicit substances, was shut down by the FBI in 2013. Ulbricht’s conviction in 2015 included charges of conspiracy and money laundering.

Ávila continues to advocate for stricter controls on online drug trafficking. “These platforms aren’t just about free markets and cryptocurrency,” she said. “They’re about real lives being lost.”

Local law enforcement has echoed similar concerns, warning of the ongoing dangers of synthetic drugs in El Dorado County. Officials urge residents to report suspicious activity and remain vigilant against new digital black markets that continue to emerge in the wake of Silk Road’s closure.
