El Dorado County, CA (InEDC)  — A multi-agency law enforcement initiative, dubbed Operation Bear Trap, has culminated in several convictions and impending deportations related to drug and firearms trafficking in El Dorado County, officials announced this week.

The collaborative effort involved federal and local agencies across California and Nevada, including the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. The operation aimed to dismantle a criminal network engaged in drug, firearms, and human trafficking.

Among those apprehended was Edgar Ivan Trejo-Mendoza, 30, who pleaded guilty on February 18 to the unlawful transfer of a firearm. Following his conviction, Trejo-Mendoza was taken into custody by FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for illegal entry into the United States, with deportation proceedings underway. El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson stated that Trejo-Mendoza is “affiliated with a known cartel, an illegal transnational gang.” Pierson emphasized the extensive efforts to address crimes committed by individuals linked to cartels, particularly in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and firearm trafficking.

Another individual, Bryan Antunez Gonzalez, was convicted of carjacking and robbery, receiving a six-year prison sentence. He is also slated for deportation. Additional convictions include Carlos Alfredo Perez Guerra, sentenced to four years for possession of child sexual abuse material and being a felon in possession of a firearm; Oscar Arreola Nunez, who received a seven-year sentence (with four years suspended) for 16 felonies, including the sale of machine guns and narcotics near a school; and Jose Medina Vazquez, serving a seven-year term for multiple felonies, including possession of a machine gun and narcotics sales.

District Attorney Pierson highlighted the significance of inter-agency collaboration in enhancing public safety:

“The success of Operation Bear Trap underscores the critical role of collaboration between local and federal agencies in ensuring public safety. By working together, law enforcement at all levels was able to disrupt a dangerous network, remove illegal firearms and narcotics from the streets, and hold criminals accountable.”

Operation Bear Trap remains an active investigation, with four additional federal defendants previously indicted for methamphetamine distribution awaiting trial. Authorities urge community members to report suspicious activities, reinforcing the collective effort to maintain safety in El Dorado County and surrounding regions.
