PLACERVILLE, Calif. — The Green Room Social Club, a prominent live music and events venue located at 251 Main St., is confronting significant financial hurdles that threaten its continued operation. Owner Jennifer Teie disclosed that the club is grappling with an impending $800,000 balloon payment on the building’s mortgage, necessitating immediate financial intervention to avert potential closure.

Established in May 2021, the Green Room Social Club has become a cultural hub in downtown Placerville, offering live performances seven nights a week. Despite a robust event schedule, the financial strain posed by the looming mortgage payment has prompted Teie to seek innovative solutions to sustain the venue’s operations.

In response to these challenges, Teie has proposed transitioning the club to a community-owned model. She envisions a cooperative ownership structure involving a select group of investors who share a vested interest in preserving the club’s legacy. “I could see 15 people coming to the table with the three of us who have already invested upwards of a half a million dollars in real money and time combined,” Teie remarked.

To facilitate this transition, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched with a goal of $1.25 million. The funds aim to address the outstanding mortgage and finance necessary repairs and improvements, including a proposed renovation to expand the club’s capacity from 100 to 250 patrons. As of now, the campaign has raised $2,786.

Teie has set a tentative deadline, indicating that without additional funding, the club may cease operations after June 2025, the date of its last scheduled event. She acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding the club’s future but remains committed to exploring all avenues to maintain its presence in the community. “I don’t have all the answers. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I do know that I need to pivot and take action when the time comes,” Teie stated.

The Green Room Social Club has played a pivotal role in Placerville’s cultural scene, providing a platform for local and touring artists and contributing to the downtown area’s economic vitality. The proposed shift to community ownership reflects a broader trend of grassroots efforts to preserve independent arts venues amid financial challenges.

Community members and patrons interested in supporting the club’s preservation can find more information and contribute through the GoFundMe campaign.
