The cuts stem from a decline in Discretionary Transient Occupancy Tax (DTOT) revenues, which were 10% lower than budgeted in the previous fiscal year. Projections indicate an additional 5% decrease in the current fiscal year. Factors contributing to this shortfall include a nationwide slowdown in the Airbnb market and changes in travel patterns post-pandemic. El Dorado Countyedcgov.us

Chris Delfino of Apple Hill’s Delfino Farms emphasized the importance of Visit El Dorado in attracting visitors year-round. “We want people to know it’s not just October,” he said. “It’s literally year-round.” KCRA

Jody Franklin of Visit El Dorado expressed concern over the decision, stating, “I don’t understand how this part is going to fix that problem. We’re the ones making the money. We’re inviting [visitors] to spend the night, spend their money, and then go back to their homes.” KCRA

In addition to Visit El Dorado, ten other organizations will lose funding, including the El Dorado County Film Commission, the California Welcome Center in El Dorado Hills, and the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. KCRA

Residents and business owners have urged the Board to reconsider, highlighting tourism’s critical role in the local economy. They warn that reduced investment in tourism promotion could lead to job losses and diminished revenue, ultimately affecting public services reliant on tax income from tourism. CitizenPortal.ai – for Informed Citizens

The Board’s decision reflects broader financial challenges, including a $20 million deficit and rising costs in general liability, workers’ compensation programs, and health insurance premiums. These fiscal pressures have necessitated difficult choices to balance the county’s budget. edcgov.usInedc

As the July 1 implementation date approaches, affected organizations and community members continue to advocate for sustainable solutions to support El Dorado County’s vital tourism industry.
