The training sessions involved Echo 1, EDSO’s Airbus H-125 helicopter, which has been instrumental in search and rescue missions across the county’s challenging terrains. These exercises are part of the department’s ongoing efforts to ensure readiness for nighttime emergencies, particularly in remote areas where ground access is limited.

“We anticipated being busy,” said Pilot Deputy Joe Brown. “But we didn’t anticipate being this busy.”

Since its commissioning in May 2024, Echo 1 has completed 15 rescues, including 13 hoist operations. The helicopter is equipped with advanced navigation systems, infrared cameras, and a 200-foot beam light, enhancing its operational capabilities during night missions.

SR3 Rescue Concepts, known for its specialized training programs for first responders, collaborated with EDSO to provide hands-on experience in night hoist operations. Their expertise in tactical medicine and search and rescue operations has been pivotal in preparing the EDSO team for complex rescue scenarios.

The training emphasized the importance of precision and coordination during hoist operations. “Hoisting is the most dangerous thing you can do with a helicopter,” Brown noted. “However, sometimes it is the tool that you need from that toolbox to get a person to higher care.”

Echo 1’s capabilities have significantly reduced response times in critical situations, allowing for swift medical evacuations and rescues in the Sierra Nevada mountains and other challenging environments. The helicopter’s agility and advanced equipment have been crucial in enhancing the safety and efficiency of rescue operations in El Dorado County.

As EDSO continues to invest in training and equipment, the department remains committed to providing the highest level of law enforcement services to the community.
