Pleasant Valley Middle School transformed into a scene out of classical Athens on May 19 as sixth grade students participated in the annual Groovy Greek Day — an immersive educational event designed to bring Ancient Greek culture to life through hands-on learning.

Organized by the sixth grade teaching team in the Gold Oak Union School District (GOUSD), the event saw students donning handmade headdress crowns, decorating themselves with Greco-style temporary tattoos, and engaging in Olympic-style competitions such as running races and wrestling. The festivities culminated in a lively musical performance — a Greek history-themed play set to the music of Grease — performed for friends and family members on the Pleasant Valley campus.

Lisa Mahoney, sixth grade English and history teacher at PV, emphasized the importance of the event in fostering student engagement and family involvement.

“When students get to immerse themselves in Ancient Greek culture, even just for a day, they connect with history in a powerful, unforgettable way,” Mahoney said. “Events like Groovy Greek Day don’t just teach facts; they create memories. Watching our students light up as they performed, competed, and created was a beautiful reminder of how hands-on learning brings the past to life and makes it meaningful for families, too.”

The program reflects PV’s and GOUSD’s broader commitment to experiential learning — an approach that complements traditional classroom instruction with active participation. Ancient Greece’s legacy is foundational to modern disciplines such as democracy, philosophy, mathematics, and the arts, yet those connections can often go unnoticed in textbooks alone.

By engaging students in creative expression, teamwork, and physical challenges, educators hope to deepen their understanding of how past civilizations continue to influence contemporary life.

Groovy Greek Day is one of several annual interactive events that highlight the district’s focus on whole-child development. For many students, the event is a highlight of the academic year — a day when history becomes not only accessible but unforgettable.
