COUNTY DESK – AUGUST 7, 2025
By your man at the blotter, clacking the keyboard and breathing caffeine
The county woke up early Thursday—too early. At 12:22 a.m., deputies were in the high country at Fleming Meadows, lanterns cutting through black pine, looking for somebody who wandered too far from camp. Barely an hour later, another rescue rolled in from the Pacific Crest Trail. Different ridge, same story: dark, cold, and a long walk home.
In between, a repo crew hit Happy Valley Road in Somerset. No shouting, no shots—just a wrecker’s winch whining in the dark. A few hours later, they were at it again, this time in Placerville, Leisure Lane, and even out to Greenwood by night’s end. Thursday was a good day for the tow yards.
Sunup brought the rest of the county’s headaches. A suspicious rig parked at the Holiday Inn in El Dorado Hills was gone by the time a cruiser rolled up. Civil squabbles kept popping like bad popcorn—Camino, Pollock Pines, Placerville, El Dorado Hills. Papers served. Voices raised. Doors slammed.
By nine, a caller in Somerset reported a grand theft on Perry Creek Road—details thin, but enough for deputies to take it down in black and white. Then came the “check the area” calls—neighbors hearing bumps in the night, strangers knocking in the day. Tahoma. El Dorado Hills. Georgetown. One by one, deputies checked them out and moved on.
The lunch crowd wasn’t much better. Ordinance beefs, suspicious cars, and a guy who made the wrong kind of impression outside Round Table Pizza. By mid-afternoon, it was a hair salon in Pollock Pines. Then Cool. Then the Safeway lot on Missouri Flat Road. Suspicious here, suspicious there—by the sound of the radio, the whole county was looking sideways at somebody.
Late shift is when it got loud. At 4:30 in Cameron Park, a verbal dust-up at Village Apartments ended in a pair of shiny bracelets and a ride downtown. An hour later, another repo crew took a car on Carson Road in Camino, while over in Pollock Pines, voices carried across the Safeway lot until deputies cooled it off. Then came a battery call in El Dorado Hills, followed by another in Pollock Pines. By 7:27 p.m., a scrap on Manzanita Street ended the same way as the earlier one—an arrest and a ride in the back seat.
Night’s tail end was all the usual suspects—trespassers at Bonanza Mobile Home Park, a vehicle parked where it shouldn’t be in Shingle Springs, a gate dispute in Cool, and one last suspicious shadow on Governor Drive in El Dorado Hills.
When the watch commander signed off, it was past midnight. The desk sergeant had a pile of paper high enough to block his coffee. In this county, the crime clock never stops ticking—just slows down long enough for the printer ink to dry.
