CAMERON PARK, Calif. — A 47-year-old Cal Fire captain was arrested early Friday in connection with a shooting that left a woman and a boy dead in Cameron Park, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies were called around 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, to a home in the 3000 block of Oakwood Road, where the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the juvenile later died at a hospital. A second child who lives at the residence was found safe, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified by deputies as Darin McFarlin, was located after midnight in Mono County and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the El Dorado County Jail on two counts of homicide; SFGATE reported he was booked around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
McFarlin is being held without bail, jail records and local outlets reported Friday.
In a brief on-camera statement, sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Kyle Parker said investigators believe “the suspect and the adult victim were in a domestic relationship. Now, what kind of how that defines out, as far as married or dating, I don’t know at this time.” Parker also said the suspect did not resist arrest.
Cal Fire confirmed to local media that McFarlin is a fire captain with the Amador–El Dorado Unit (AEU) and said the agency is monitoring the situation. The Sheriff’s Office said the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Mono County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol assisted in the investigation.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims, pending notification of family. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Update: The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division has identified Marissa N. Divodi-Lessa, 29 years old, of Shingle Springs, Ca as the adult victim in this investigation. The identification of the juvenile victim in the investigation will not be released.
