Motherlode Weather: Sunny, Hazy Days Ahead — Smoke Advisories, Heat Through the Weekend

Partly sunny and mild this weekend

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A stretch of sunny, warm and occasionally hazy weather is expected across the Motherlode through next week, with smoke from nearby fires or distant plumes lowering visibility at times and pushing particulate pollution into the valley. The National Weather Service’s Motherlode zone forecast calls for highs in the mid-80s to mid-90s Thursday (86–94 degrees), lighter temperatures Friday and through the weekend, and a slight chance of showers by next Wednesday as a weak system approaches.

Thursday will begin clear but with “areas of smoke” lingering into the afternoon before skies settle into sunny conditions; evening lows are expected in the upper 50s to upper 60s. Friday and Saturday look mostly sunny with daytime highs dropping a few degrees each day before a cooler, partly cloudy pattern arrives midweek with a slight shower chance and highs falling into the upper 60s to low 80s by Wednesday. These details are drawn from the NWS Motherlode zone forecast

Air-quality monitors in the Placerville area are showing moderate particulate levels, and agencies urge caution for people who are sensitive to smoke. Real-time readings and health guidance indicate that those with respiratory or heart conditions, older adults and children should limit prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion while smoke is present. “Fine particles (particulate matter or PM) in smoke can cause health problems, especially for children, older people and those with respiratory conditions,” the El Dorado County wildfire smoke guidance states.

Local incident activity remains largely contained, but crews are still working recent fires and small holdovers that can produce intermittent haze. CAL FIRE’s incident list shows recent El Dorado fires moving toward containment — conditions that still can create localized smoke impacts even when a blaze is largely controlled. Residents should monitor CAL FIRE and county updates if they notice smoke or changing conditions.

What to expect and what to do
• Expect daytime highs near 86–94 degrees on Thursday, easing to the high 70s–mid 80s through the weekend and into early next week, with overnight lows mostly in the 50s and 60s.
• Smoke may reduce visibility at times, especially during the afternoon and evening; check current AQI before planning outdoor workouts or school activities.
• If you smell smoke or see haze, shorten or move strenuous outdoor activity indoors; those who are sensitive should take extra precautions and follow county health guidance.
• Stay informed: the National Weather Service and local emergency channels will post updates if winds shift or new smoke sources arise.

“NWS forecasters note ‘areas of smoke until late afternoon’ for the Motherlode, so residents should expect intermittent haze even on otherwise sunny days,” the agency said in its zone forecast.
