CAMINO, Calif. — After a quarter-century of pouring wine and welcoming visitors to the Sierra Foothills, DiVittorio Winery in Camino is closing its doors. Owners Dr. Al and Sally diVittorio announced the decision this month, citing health issues and the physical toll of operating a small winery.

Founded in the late 1990s, the family-run business became an official commercial winery in 2011. Known for its estate-grown reds and approachable tasting room, DiVittorio built a loyal following among locals and tourists exploring El Dorado County’s wine country. The closure marks the end of an era for one of the region’s boutique producers.

“Due to health concerns and physical demands, it’s time to slow down,”

Dr. diVittorio said in a statement shared through the Sacramento Business Journal. The couple has begun selling off winery equipment and remaining inventory as they prepare for the transition.

The announcement comes at a time when many foothill wineries face mounting pressures, from rising operating costs to labor shortages. While larger operations may weather the challenges more easily, smaller family-run wineries often struggle when health, age, or financial hurdles arise.

Local wine enthusiasts say DiVittorio’s departure will be felt beyond Camino. The winery has long been a staple stop along Carson Road, a corridor dotted with orchards, tasting rooms, and farm stands. Its closure underscores the fragility of family businesses that help define El Dorado County’s agricultural identity.

For now, those hoping to secure a final bottle or piece of winery equipment are encouraged to reach out directly to DiVittorio Winery in Camino. Whether another operator steps into the space or the property transitions to a new use remains to be seen.

  • Founders: Dr. Al and Sally diVittorio. Their project began as a family venture. Sally is a registered nurse.

  • Community: Local wine lovers, tasting-room visitors, regional wine associations in El Dorado County, and neighboring wineries.

  • Employees & Related Businesses: Staff, grape suppliers, equipment vendors, tasting room operators, possibly tourism partners.
