El Dorado County, CA (October 25, 2024) — The 2023 Wine Grape Survey reveals an impressive resurgence for El Dorado County’s wine grape industry, as growers reported a total crop value of $9.75 million—an impressive 133% increase from 2022’s $4.18 million. In the wake of a challenging 2022 harvest hit by an April freeze, this year’s results highlight a significant turnaround, making it an informative resource for vineyard owners and managers in the region.

Total wine grape production climbed to 5,826 tons, a 150% increase from the previous year’s 2,326 tons. Despite the bumper crop, the average price per ton of grapes dipped slightly to $1,985, down by 3% from 2022’s $2,050. Nevertheless, strong demand outside the county led to a 177% increase in tonnage sold beyond El Dorado, totaling 2,057 tons.

The survey highlighted the breadth of varietals cultivated, with 82 distinct types grown on 2,634 acres. Notable production increases were seen across prominent varietals like Zinfandel, Syrah, and Grenache, contributing to El Dorado’s reputation for diverse, high-quality wines. While about 11.5% of the 2023 harvest remained unsold, this year’s yield is expected to further enhance the region’s influence in the California wine industry.

For local and aspiring vintners, the survey provides a valuable snapshot of market trends, helping guide future plantings and production plans for the region’s wine sector.
