PLACERVILLE, Calif. — After a quarter-century of turning her home kitchen into a neighborhood cake studio, Placerville baker Mandy Evans is moving out from behind the oven and into a storefront on Broadway.
Evans — who has been filling orders for weddings, birthdays and community events for more than 25 years — announced on social media that she will open her first brick-and-mortar shop at 1430 Broadway near the Grocery Outlet, with plans for a January 2026 launch. The new shop, billed as both a bakery and ice-cream shop, will offer grab-and-go items and custom orders she’s long been known for.
“I’m opening my very first STOREFRONT BAKERY and ICE CREAM SHOP — January 2026!”
Evans wrote in a recent Instagram post announcing the move, adding that the location will feature cupcakes, cake jars and other items ideal for people on the go.
Local customers and event planners have relied on Evans’ home operation for years. Her social pages show a steady stream of custom work — from wedding cakes to seasonal offerings — and her followers greeted the storefront news with congratulations and questions about hours and a grand opening event. Evans has used the last weeks leading up to the move to tease menu items and test market pop-ups.
The Broadway address places Caked within easy reach of downtown Placerville traffic and nearby grocery anchors, which could help draw both regular foot traffic and destination visitors. Small businesses like Evans’ often help diversify downtown storefronts and generate compact employment opportunities; Evans has not yet announced staffing plans but long-time cottage bakers typically expand with a small crew for front-of-house and baking needs.
Evans’ transition from home baker to storefront operator follows a broader pattern of home-based food businesses formalizing into retail spaces as demand grows and regulatory frameworks evolve. For customers, the change means a regular, walk-in place to buy everyday sweet treats in addition to the custom cakes Evans will continue to take orders for.
