🕵️♂️ Editor’s Note: Regarding Death Reports in the Sheriff’s Log
Not every reported death means foul play. In El Dorado County, when someone dies unexpectedly — not under active hospice care or in a hospital with an attending physician — the death is flagged for investigation. This doesn’t mean it’s a homicide, overdose, or suicide. It means the cause isn’t immediately known.
The Sheriff’s Log will reflect these cases simply as “Dead Person” entries until the coroner and pathologist determine if the cause was natural or otherwise. Most turn out to be from natural causes — stroke, heart failure, aneurysm — but there’s no guessing in the death business. If there were signs of a threat to the public, you’d know: there’d be a full statement and public warning. But until then, silence means procedure.
All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The information here is classified by law as public information.
