PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Law enforcement agencies on Thursday executed 21 arrest warrants across four counties as part of Operation “Summer Heat,” a multi-year, multi-agency sweep targeting cartel-supplied gangs in the Lake Tahoe bi-state region.

At least 15 people were taken into custody in California and Nevada during the operation, though local agencies reported slightly different tallies as officers finished serving warrants and processing suspects. South Lake Tahoe police reported search warrants served at seven locations in South Lake Tahoe and six additional locations in neighboring jurisdictions; other news outlets reported 10 arrests in California and five in Nevada.

Prosecutors say the sweep targeted alleged Norteño gang leaders and associates accused of trafficking cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl — and of attempting to recruit middle- and high-school students into drug distribution. The El Dorado County District Attorney VERN PIERSON also said some suspects allegedly exploited male recruits to gain access to underage girls. Additional defendants include people who were previously deported, members of outlaw motorcycle clubs and other gang members linked to deadly overdoses.

“El Dorado County stands as one of California’s safest counties due to our unwavering commitment to prioritizing accountability for criminal misconduct,”

District Attorney Vern Pierson said in the office’s press release announcing the operation.

“This operation underscores our dedication to public safety and justice, achieved through a robust and dynamic partnership with our local and federal law enforcement allies.”

The operation — called “Daisy Cutter” by South Lake Tahoe police and “Operation Summer Heat” by the El Dorado DA  VERN PIERSON — was coordinated with partner prosecutors and agencies across state lines, including Alpine County (Calif.), Douglas and Washoe counties (Nev.), and federal partners such as the FBI, ATF, DEA and Homeland Security Investigations. Officials said the takedown is part of a nationwide FBI initiative aimed at dismantling cartel-backed criminal enterprises.

Local law enforcement credited community tips and months of investigation for the sweep and said several warrants remain active and will be executed in the coming weeks. Prosecutors did not immediately publish charging documents detailing the precise counts for each defendant; court filings and arraignment schedules were expected to follow.

What this means locally: authorities framed the action as disruption of an organized supply chain that poses both violent-crime and public-health risks — especially given the presence of fentanyl in alleged trafficking activity and the reported efforts to recruit minors. Investigators urged residents with information about gang activity to contact local police or the DA’s tip line.
