In December 1978, Randy Brooks, a Texas singer-songwriter, found himself snowbound at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe. During this time, he encountered Elmo Shropshire and his then-wife, Patsy, who performed as the musical duo Elmo & Patsy. Brooks introduced them to his song, a satirical response to the sentimental holiday tunes of the era, and they were immediately captivated by its offbeat humor.
Elmo & Patsy began performing the song, and in 1979, they self-released it in San Francisco. The track gained traction when San Francisco radio station KSFO gave it airplay, leading to its growing popularity. By the early 1980s, the song had become a seasonal hit, first on country stations and then on Top 40 stations.
The song’s success was further amplified by a music video that received heavy rotation on MTV in the early 1980s, propelling it past traditional holiday classics on the Billboard charts.
Since its debut, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” has sold over 11 million copies and inspired various merchandise, including an animated Christmas special, musical toys, and even a branded hot chocolate mix.
The song’s unique blend of dark humor and catchy melody has ensured its place in holiday music history, all thanks to a serendipitous meeting in Lake Tahoe.
