By Cris Alarcon, InEDC Writer. (April 7, 2025) — PLACERVILLE, Calif. — The Placerville Times served as a significant voice in El Dorado County, chronicling local events and developments during its publication years. Established as The Placerville Times in 1936, it succeeded earlier iterations and continued until 1956, when it was succeeded by The Times, which ran from 1956 to 1958.
Throughout its publication, The Placerville Times provided residents with news pertinent to Placerville and the surrounding areas. In 1958, The Placerville Times merged with the Mountain Democrat, resulting in the formation of The Mountain Democrat and Placerville Times. This merger combined the legacies of both newspapers, continuing the tradition of local journalism in the region.
The Mountain Democrat, known as California’s oldest newspaper, has a rich history dating back to the Gold Rush era. Its evolution over the years reflects the dynamic changes in the region and the newspaper industry. The incorporation of The Placerville Times into the Mountain Democrat in 1958 marked a significant consolidation in local media.
Today, archives of The Mountain Democrat and Placerville Times offer invaluable insights into the history and development of El Dorado County, serving as essential resources for researchers and historians.
