PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Aspiring ranchers in El Dorado County will have a chance to learn the ropes from one of the region’s top livestock educators at the “Getting Started with Ranching” workshop, hosted by the El Dorado County Farm Bureau on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at 2460 Headington Road in Placerville.

This introductory class is part of the Farm Bureau’s “Agrication” series, designed to equip local residents with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in agriculture. The event is free for Farm Bureau members and costs just $5 for non-members.

Dan Macon, Central Sierra Livestock and Natural Resources Advisor with the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), will lead the session. Macon is widely respected for his hands-on experience and practical insights into small-scale ranching in foothill communities. Participants will learn how to evaluate the economics of ranching, create a business and marketing plan, and navigate the regulations associated with commercial livestock production.

“Starting a ranch is more than just loving animals—it’s about understanding risk, managing costs, and complying with state and local rules,”

said Macon.

“This workshop will help folks decide if ranching is a good fit, and how to get started on the right foot.”

With continued interest in local food production and land stewardship, opportunities for new ranchers are expanding—but success requires sound planning. This class aims to bridge the knowledge gap for first-timers and small-acreage landowners looking to make livestock a viable part of their livelihood.

The El Dorado County Farm Bureau, a nonprofit advocate for agricultural producers, sees this as a vital part of preserving the rural heritage of the Sierra foothills. Pre-registration is encouraged but not
required. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
