The Student Intern Program is designed for college students currently enrolled full-time or part-time in an accredited institution, working toward an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or vocational certification. Interns will engage in clerical support and front desk duties across several divisions, including:

  • Coroner: Assisting with administrative tasks and gaining exposure to investigative processes.

  • Property & Evidence: Managing evidence documentation and storage procedures.

  • Custody: Supporting administrative functions related to inmate management.

  • Records: Handling data entry and maintenance of official records.

Notably, roles in the Coroner and Property & Evidence divisions may offer hands-on experience, providing interns with a deeper understanding of specific law enforcement functions.

Eligibility and Application

To qualify, applicants must be actively enrolled in a college or university program leading to a degree or certification. While some positions may require a valid driver’s license, all candidates must be at least 18 years old or possess a work permit if younger. Interns are expected to work no more than 24 hours per week during the academic term but may have the opportunity for full-time hours during school breaks.

Prospective interns can apply online through the El Dorado County Human Resources website. The selection process includes an interview, background investigation, medical examination, and psychological evaluation to ensure the suitability of candidates for the program.

Additional Opportunities

For younger individuals aged 15 to 21 with an interest in law enforcement, EDSO offers the Explorer Program. This program provides weekly training sessions, participation in community events, and insights into various law enforcement careers. Explorers assist with traffic control, crowd management, and crime prevention activities, all while receiving mentorship from Sheriff’s Office personnel.
