El Dorado County (Nov 8, 2024) – Veterans Day, celebrated annually on November 11, commemorates the service and sacrifice of military veterans across the United States. The date has historical significance rooted in the conclusion of World War I, known as “the war to end all wars.” Hostilities formally ceased with an armistice agreement signed at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918—symbolically marking “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.” This day initially became Armistice Day, meant to honor those who served in World War I, with ceremonies across the globe, including in the U.S., U.K., and France, where unknown soldiers were laid to rest as tributes to all who had fallen.

In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day to recognize all American veterans, not just those from WWI. Each year, a national ceremony is held at Arlington National Cemetery, where a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns at precisely 11 a.m., a tribute repeated in communities nationwide. This federal holiday allows Americans to honor veterans’ contributions and sacrifices through parades, educational activities, and personal acts of gratitude, reaffirming the significance of their service in safeguarding national freedom and peace.
