The American River Conservancy (ARC), based in Coloma, has been at the forefront of these initiatives. Since its inception in 1989, ARC has protected over 30,325 acres of native fisheries, endangered species habitats, and recreational lands within the upper American and Cosumnes River watersheds . One of its significant projects includes the ongoing conservation of the 7,179-acre El Dorado Ranch, aimed at establishing the first State Wildlife Area in El Dorado County .

“El Dorado Ranch represents an effort to protect the region’s oak woodlands and the health of the Cosumnes River,”

ARC states on its website.

“Acre by acre, ARC and our partners are protecting these heritage woodlands and the creeks and rivers that sustain them” .

In addition to land conservation, ARC offers a variety of recreational and educational programs, including hikes, bike rides, fishing, and workshops, to engage the community and foster environmental stewardship .

El Dorado County’s government is also playing a pivotal role in watershed management. The county’s Watershed Management program focuses on advising and assisting with countywide watershed issues, promoting a multi-benefit approach to support a healthy ecosystem, reduce fire risks, and maintain the integrity of the headwaters .

Supervisor Lori Parlin, Chair of the El Dorado Water Agency (EDWA) Board, emphasized the importance of investing in the upper American River watershed.

“Investing in the upper American River watershed’s outdoor spaces is important not just to preserve its natural beauty, but every dollar invested in recreational lands supports good health for people of all abilities, ages, and socio-economic backgrounds, and stimulates and strengthens our regional economy,”  –Parlin said .

These concerted efforts by ARC, El Dorado County, and community members aim to ensure that the American River continues to be a thriving natural habitat and a source of sustainable recreation for generations to come.
