Agriculture Department’s Report

The Agriculture Commissioner for El Dorado County highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting a significant increase in mountain lion encounters. “In 24 years, this is the first year that I have seen, heard, and dealt with so many incidents,” she remarked. The presentation included detailed findings on the frequency and distribution of sightings and attacks.

The Board of Supervisors was informed about the alarming rise in incidents, with 57 reported sightings this year alone, compared to the usual 20 or 30. In response to the data, the Board approved a motion seen as a step forward by community leaders. They directed staff to draft a letter within 60 days to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, proposing specific changes aimed at improving mountain lion management. Additionally, the board requested strategies for seeking statewide policy changes.

The community remains hopeful that collaboration with Fish and Wildlife will lead to effective measures to address the increasing mountain lion activity in El Dorado County.
