El Dorado County Schools Earn 2026 California Distinguished School Honors

Four middle schools in El Dorado County have been recognized among the state’s top-performing campuses in the 2026 California Distinguished Schools program, a prestigious award administered by the California Department of Education.

The honored campuses include Camerado Springs Middle School and Rolling Hills Middle School of the Buckeye Union Elementary School District, Miller’s Hill School in the Latrobe School District, and Marina Village Middle School of the Rescue Union Elementary School District.

The California Distinguished Schools Program, established in 1985, is one of the state’s highest recognitions for public schools. The award highlights campuses demonstrating exceptional student performance, innovative programs, and measurable progress in closing achievement gaps.

“These schools represent the dedication of educators, students, and families who work every day to create exceptional learning environments,” the California Department of Education said in a statement announcing the awards.

Data-driven selection process

Unlike many recognition programs, schools do not apply for the Distinguished School designation. Instead, the state automatically identifies eligible campuses using performance data from the California School Dashboard.

To qualify, schools must meet several strict criteria, including:

  • At least 95% participation in statewide assessments

  • Strong academic performance and growth in English language arts and mathematics

  • Positive school climate indicators, including low suspension rates and reduced chronic absenteeism

The program alternates recognition between school levels each year. In 2026, the focus is on middle and high schools, while elementary schools were recognized in 2025.

A long history of academic recognition

El Dorado County schools have earned numerous Distinguished School honors over the decades.

In 2025, Jackson Elementary School—also part of the Rescue Union Elementary School District—was the county’s only campus to receive the award during the elementary school cycle.

Previous middle and high school honorees included Herbert C. Green Middle School in 2024, along with repeat recognition for several campuses.

Among the most notable multi-year honorees is Rolling Hills Middle School, which has earned Distinguished School recognition in 1996, 2004, 2021, and now 2026, highlighting a sustained record of academic achievement.

Several high schools in the region have also received the honor in past years, including Oak Ridge High School and Ponderosa High School in 2001.

New recognition category added

Beginning in 2026, the California Distinguished Schools program also includes a new designation called “Beacons of Opportunity.” The category recognizes high-performing rural and Title I schools that demonstrate strong outcomes despite economic challenges.

County education officials say the continued recognition of local campuses reflects the strength of educators, school leadership, and community support across El Dorado County.

The El Dorado County Office of Education maintains a historical record of Distinguished School recipients as part of its ongoing effort to highlight educational excellence throughout the region.
