In a move that reflects tightening fiscal constraints, El Dorado County has approved a 2025 budget that includes a modest workforce reduction of 0.005% and a $4 million cut from the originally requested El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) allocation.

The Board of Supervisors finalized the spending plan during its June 18 meeting, with county officials emphasizing a strategy of long-term financial sustainability over short-term expansion. Though the personnel reduction is minimal—impacting only a few positions—it comes amid increasing costs for pensions, infrastructure, and wildfire preparedness.

County CAO Don Ashton described the budget as

“measured and proactive,” “We are facing a period where we have to match our ambitions with our financial reality. The 0.005% reduction in staffing will not affect essential services.”

The EDSO, which initially submitted a request exceeding $110 million, will see a final budget nearly $4 million lower than requested. Despite the adjustment, Sheriff Jeff Leikauf said his department remains focused on maintaining public safety.

“We’re committed to delivering the highest standard of law enforcement services within the means provided,”

Leikauf said in a written statement.

“We will continue to protect and serve with innovation and resourcefulness.”

Most of the county’s general fund remains committed to public safety, health and human services, and roads. Supervisors said the savings will also help the county maintain reserves in case of emergencies, including wildfires or economic downturns.

While the budget passed with little public opposition, several community members urged the board to reconsider cuts to public safety. However, Supervisor Wendy Thomas noted,

“No one wants to make cuts—but responsible stewardship sometimes requires difficult decisions. This is a plan that keeps our county stable without sacrificing our future.”

The finalized budget documents are available through the El Dorado County website and the Clerk of the Board.
