Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, Calif. | May 20, 2025
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) Board of Directors voted Tuesday to adopt Resolution #14-2025, authorizing the placement of direct charges on El Dorado County’s property tax roll in support of fire services for the recently annexed Meeks Bay Fire Protection District.
The action formalizes a critical funding mechanism, aligning with requirements under Government Code Sections 53978 and 50078, as well as Proposition 218, which governs the collection of special taxes, assessments, fees, and abatement charges. The resolution enables El Dorado County to collect these charges annually on behalf of NTFPD without needing additional board approval each year.
“This agreement ensures stable, transparent funding for essential fire protection and emergency services in Meeks Bay,”
said Fire Chief Steve Leighton, who presented the resolution to the board.
“It’s a practical step forward to fully integrate operations following annexation.”
The annexation of Meeks Bay Fire Protection District, completed earlier this year, expanded NTFPD’s jurisdiction and created the need for updated financial and operational frameworks. The new agreement, once executed by the Fire Chief, will remain in effect until rescinded by future board action, according to the staff report.
Residents of Meeks Bay can expect no disruption to services, and the tax roll process helps ensure that the costs of fire protection are equitably distributed across the community.
The adopted resolution does not require annual renewal, streamlining the administrative process between the District and El Dorado County.
