MEEKS BAY, Calif. — A 53-year-old man visiting Lake Tahoe drowned Tuesday afternoon at Meeks Bay, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies responded about 2:42 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning at the popular West Shore beach; first responders performed life-saving measures but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the county coroner listed the cause of death as drowning.

Sgt. Kyle Parker, a public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said the man was “visiting the Lake Tahoe area from out of the country.” He added that investigators do not yet have answers about what led to the drowning.

The sheriff’s office has not released the identity of the man pending family notification, and the department said the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not reported any suspicious circumstances as of the latest updates.

The incident comes amid heightened attention to water safety around Lake Tahoe following a separate June boating accident near D.L. Bliss State Park that killed eight people. Local authorities have urged caution when recreating on Tahoe’s waters, noting that sudden storms and cold, choppy conditions can create dangerous situations even on otherwise calm days.

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s incident is asked to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. The department’s non-emergency numbers and press contact are listed on the sheriff’s official site.
