El Dorado County (July 11, 2024) –  Assemblymember Joe Patterson shares insights into the Safe Return Program, a 24-hour response service dedicated to protecting seniors who have lost their ability to recognize familiar faces, places, names, and neighborhoods. 1. Identification Tools:

Participants in the program receive identification items such as bracelets, necklaces, or wallet cards. These items include essential information like the individual’s name, emergency contact details, and any relevant medical conditions. Some advanced systems may also incorporate GPS tracking devices to locate the individual quickly if they go missing.

2. Registration Systems:

Families can register their loved ones with the Safe Return Program, providing detailed information that can be used in the event of a disappearance. This database includes the individual’s photograph, physical description, medical information, and emergency contacts. This data is accessible to law enforcement and emergency responders, facilitating a quicker and more efficient search.

3. Community and Law Enforcement Training:

A critical aspect of the program is educating the community and law enforcement officers about dementia-related wandering. Training sessions help these groups understand the behaviors and needs of individuals with dementia, improving their ability to assist in search efforts and ensuring a compassionate approach.

4. Emergency Response Protocols:

When a registered individual goes missing, the Safe Return Program activates an emergency response. This often includes notifying local law enforcement, community volunteers, and nearby businesses. The swift mobilization of resources increases the likelihood of a safe and timely recovery.

5. Support for Families:

The program also provides support and resources for families, including guidance on how to prevent wandering and how to respond if a loved one goes missing. This support can be invaluable in reducing the stress and anxiety that comes with caring for a senior with dementia.

Benefits:

  • Enhanced Safety: By having identification and registration, disoriented seniors are more likely to be found quickly and safely.
  • Peace of Mind: Families gain reassurance knowing there is a structured plan in place should their loved one wander off.
  • Community Involvement: The program fosters a sense of community responsibility and awareness, encouraging collective efforts in safeguarding vulnerable seniors.
