GRIZZLY FLATS, CA – In a tragic recurrence, a Grizzly Flats family, previously devastated by the 2021 Caldor Fire, has suffered another loss as a fire consumed their newly rebuilt barn, claiming the lives of two cherished show animals.

Amber Tyler, 17, who has been dedicated to raising show animals since the age of five, was heartbroken by the incident. “It took me three days to not just cry,” she shared, reflecting on the emotional toll. A week prior to the blaze, Amber had introduced Dottie the pig and Oakley the lamb to the barn.

The fire occurred while the family was away from their property. A neighbor alerted them to the blaze, but by the time they returned, the structure and animals were lost. “How do you call your kid and tell them that they just lost everything that they dreamed of?” lamented Amber’s mother, Candance Tyler.

Rebuilding has been a formidable challenge for the Tylers and many other Caldor Fire survivors, especially without insurance. “We’re still in our trailer almost four years later, struggling to rebuild,” Candance noted. “We’re building everything by ourselves with the help of family and friends. California just has so many rules and regulations that make it so hard to rebuild.”

Despite the setbacks, the Grizzly Flats community has rallied around the family. Amber’s grandmother gifted her a new piglet, and a family friend provided a lamb, enabling her to continue her passion for animal showing. “I am just so proud of her; she is just so resilient. She just keeps moving forward,” Candance expressed.

The family suspects that a heat lamp inside the barn may have ignited the fire. Reconstruction will require significant funds, but Amber remains optimistic, aiming to showcase her new animals this summer and aspiring to become a large animal emergency veterinarian.

Reflecting on their ordeal, Candance said, “We lost our home in Caldor, and it hurt to lose everything, but we didn’t lose life in Caldor.”

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Caldor Fire survivors in Grizzly Flats. Many residents continue to navigate the arduous rebuilding process, often hindered by financial constraints and regulatory hurdles. Community support remains a vital component in aiding these families as they strive to restore their lives.
