Olympic Village, Lake Tahoe (Jan 1 2024) – In a distressing incident on 12/31/23 at the Palisades Ski Resort, a child was airlifted to medical attention after a harrowing fall from the Gold Coast chairlift. The incident unfolded on the slopes of the renowned ski destination, formerly known as Squaw Valley and host to the 1960 Olympic Winter Games.

According to an employee from the Olympic Valley Fire Department, the child tumbled off the Gold Coast chairlift, prompting an emergency response from local authorities. The incident was reported by an employee who receives dispatch alerts, shedding light on the challenges faced by the ski patrol team.

Eyewitnesses in the lift line revealed that the child was accompanied by other kids and a ski instructor. Unfortunately, the instructor was unable to reach the child in time to prevent the fall, as they were positioned a few kids away. Compounding the issue, the lift operator failed to halt the lift at the onset of the loading incident, and the instructor did not signal for a stop, leading to a series of unfortunate events.

Skiers on the upper mountain, specifically around the Gold Coast Express lift, noticed the disturbance when the lift went on patrol hold. Speculations arose as witnesses observed what appeared to be a fall from the lift. In response, the resort took swift action by closing the chair, deploying approximately 10-12 ski patrollers to assist the injured child.

As the situation intensified, a helicopter was summoned to the scene for an airlift, underlining the severity of the child’s condition. Though official details on the child’s injuries are limited, an eyewitness on-site disclosed that the young victim suffered a compound leg fracture. Remarkably, the child remained conscious and alert during the distressing ordeal.

Despite the gravity of the incident, the resort has yet to provide an official response to inquiries. Concerns linger regarding the safety protocols in place and the immediate actions taken by the ski resort staff. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with winter sports, prompting a reevaluation of safety measures to prevent future accidents.
