El Dorado County DOT Provides Updates on Diamond Springs Construction Projects

Diamond Springs, CA – The El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT) has provided an update on recent and upcoming construction projects in the Diamond Springs area, aiming to enhance infrastructure and improve safety for residents and motorists.

  • Public Safety Facility: Completed in 2019 on Industrial Way off Missouri Flat Road, this facility features a main public entrance on Industrial Drive and a gated staff-only entrance on Merchandise Way. In June 2024, DOT finalized traffic signal installations and improvements at both the Industrial Drive and Enterprise Drive intersections on Missouri Flat Road.

  • Underground Utility District: To enhance safety, DOT established an underground utility district in Diamond Springs, removing utility poles and overhead lines. This initiative was funded by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and was part of the Diamond Springs Parkway Phase 1A project, which realigned and widened State Route 49 between Pleasant Valley Road and Bradley Drive.

  • El Dorado Trail Extension: In May 2020, construction was completed on the westward extension of the El Dorado Trail from Missouri Flat Road to Oriental Street. This project was primarily funded by a state Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant.

Ongoing and Upcoming Projects:

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing: Initiated in August 2024, this project aims to connect the east and west portions of the El Dorado Trail via an overcrossing at Missouri Flat Road. It is on schedule for completion in May 2025 and is funded by a state ATP grant.

  • Diamond Springs Parkway Phase 1B: Set to begin in May 2025, this project will introduce a new four-lane arterial roadway with concrete curbs, gutters, Class II bike lanes, and sidewalks on both sides. The roadway will extend from Missouri Flat Road south of Golden Center Drive to a new T-intersection with State Route 49 south of Bradley Drive. The project also includes signalization at the Missouri Flat Road, Throwita Way, and State Route 49 intersections. Funding is secured from local and state transportation capital funds.

Rafael Martinez, the County’s Director of Transportation, emphasized the importance of these developments, stating, “We want the traveling public to better understand the how and why behind the construction projects they’ve been seeing for the last couple years and will continue to see as DOT works to make that area safer.”

Martinez also noted that temporary traffic controls and detours will be necessary during ongoing construction to ensure the safety of motorists and workers. DOT will provide notifications at least one week in advance of closures and traffic impacts through the County website, press releases, and portable changeable message signs.
