El Dorado Hills (Dec 24, 2024) – In a heartbreaking turn of events, the collapse of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf has taken more than wood and steel—it has displaced the sacred ground of a family’s cherished memories. Among those mourning the loss is El Dorado Hills resident Ruby Shields, whose mother’s memorial bench was swept into the ocean during Monday’s collapse.

The bench, dedicated to Kim Nellany-Shields, who passed away in 1994, served as a beacon of remembrance for the Shields family and strangers alike. From 180 miles away, Ruby learned of the disaster through a drone video shared on Reddit, an experience she likened to “a graveyard being hit by a tornado.”

“It was there for everyone to feel closer to her,” Ruby said. For her family, the bench overlooking the ocean wasn’t just a seat—it was her mother’s gravesite in spirit.

A Community Comes Together

Andrew Polay and Ali Walsh

Ruby’s story resonated deeply online, and by Tuesday, a glimmer of hope emerged. A nameplate from her mother’s bench was recovered on Seabright State Beach by Santa Cruz locals Ali Walsh and Andrew Polay. Driven by empathy, the two strangers combed the beach after seeing Ruby’s desperate Reddit post.

“Probably because I’ve been through something similar, it landed differently,” said Walsh, who also lost a parent and has her father’s original memorial bench in her yard.

The trio’s paths converged serendipitously when Polay encountered Walsh carrying the nameplate. “I was just standing there for 30 seconds,” Polay recounted, “and she walked by with it.”

A Christmas Reunion

Ruby plans to meet Walsh on Christmas Day to retrieve the nameplate, a poignant moment underscoring the spirit of human kindness.

“I’ve never felt more like my parents are watching over me,” Ruby shared in an emotional Reddit thread.

Yet, questions remain about the bench’s fate. Ruby has been in contact with Santa Cruz city officials, who expressed willingness to assist but have not provided specifics.

A Legacy Beyond the Bench

For Ruby, the bench’s significance extends beyond her family. It was a place of solace for anyone who needed it. Recalling one visit, she said, “A high school girl was crying, and I told her, ‘That’s my mom’s bench—she’s a great listener.’”

The bench reflected Kim’s legacy as a speech pathologist, a caregiver, and a compassionate soul who brought light to children with speech disabilities.

As Ruby continues her efforts to recover the bench, she’s buoyed by the unexpected kindness of strangers. For the Shields family, the bench isn’t just a memorial—it’s a testament to the enduring power of love and community.
