PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A teacher’s suggestion led Ponderosa High School senior Natalie Stephens-Butler to an inspiring journey in the Academic Decathlon, profoundly shaping her views on learning, teamwork, and resilience.

Encouraged by Learning Center teacher Cassie Barton, Natalie joined the Academic Decathlon and discovered a sense of belonging and increased confidence. She experienced academic and personal growth through a competition that transcends the pursuit of medals.

“Academic Decathlon has taught me that winning is about the time you spend with your team members and how I’m learning and then putting my own effort into teaching others,” she said. “I’m helping others to feel comfortable in their own abilities and feel smart. Even if they don’t win a medal, they feel confident that they know some fun, tricky questions. I feel like that’s a win in my book.”

Each year, the competition features a different theme. This year’s focus on climate change challenged Natalie and her peers to remain neutral on controversial environmental topics, broadening her perspective and teaching her to consider multiple viewpoints.

Natalie credits the Academic Decathlon as a source of motivation during difficult times. When facing mental health challenges, her commitment to her team and the competition provided purpose and strength to persevere.

Over three years, Natalie has earned 12 medals, exemplifying perseverance and growth. She encourages other students to participate, emphasizing that “it’s so much more than tests and essays!” She highlights the unexpected rewards of being part of a transformative team.
