Shingle Springs, California (May 10, 2025) — Seaman Apprentice Zachary Zimmerman, a 21-year-old native of Shingle Springs, California, has been honored with the U.S. Navy’s prestigious Military Excellence Award (MEA) upon graduating from Recruit Training Command (RTC) on May 8. This accolade recognizes the recruit who best exemplifies enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military bearing, and teamwork, distinguishing Zimmerman as the top sailor among his peers.

A graduate of Ponderosa High School, Zimmerman participated in varsity volleyball and basketball before working part-time in the restaurant industry. He enlisted in the Navy to serve his country and pursue a career in the medical field, aspiring to attend medical school in the future.

Zimmerman’s nine-week training was guided by Recruit Division Commanders Chief Machinist’s Mate Terrence Kellogg, Gas Turbine Systems Technician 1st Class Vincent Alexander, and Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Alejandra Davison. He credited their leadership and the camaraderie of his shipmates for his success.

Following graduation, Zimmerman will attend Hospital Corpsman “A” School in San Antonio, Texas, to receive training in patient care and first aid procedures.
