Snowpack Surges to 113%: South Tahoe Ski Resorts Extend Season Amidst Spring Snowfall

Spring Sun & Some Rain

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev., April 3, 2024 – Recent storms have blanketed South Lake Tahoe ski resorts with 3-4 feet of snow, paving the way for exceptional spring skiing conditions. In response to the abundance of snow, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort have decided to extend their seasons until April 21, with Kirkwood Mountain Resort following suit until April 28. This decision comes as the California Department of Water Resources reports a snowpack reading at Phillips Station, measuring at an impressive 113% of average for this date.

A potent cold front is currently sweeping through the Sierra and western Nevada, ushering in gusty winds, notably lower temperatures, and the possibility of snow showers until Thursday.

  • Gusty Winds: Strong southwest winds are forecasted to develop this afternoon, particularly north of Highway 50, before shifting towards the Eastern Sierra of Mono and Mineral counties overnight into Thursday morning. These winds are expected to impact outdoor activities, potentially causing turbulence for airplane flights, and creating hazardous crosswinds for tall vehicles, particularly along Highway 395, Highway 95, and I-580. Gusts along the Sierra crest could exceed 80 mph.
  • Snow Showers: Snow showers are anticipated across northeastern California and the Sierra region until Friday. Roads, especially in the Sierra, are likely to become slick, particularly at night. However, the higher April sun angle should limit accumulations during daylight hours. Travelers planning to traverse the Sierra are advised to prepare for possible delays. Expected snow accumulations include: above 7000 feet in Greater Lake Tahoe, with more than 6 inches on the west side of Lake Tahoe and 1 to 2 inches in the Carson Range; above 7000 feet in Mono County, 3 to 12 inches with up to 18 inches along the highest Sierra crest; below 7000 feet in Mono County, a trace up to 4 inches; and in the lowest Nevada valleys, light snow showers with little to no accumulation.
  • Cold Snap: Abnormally cold temperatures for early April are forecasted, with daytime temperatures expected to be 15-20 degrees below normal on Thursday and Friday. Minimal warming is expected over the weekend. Hard freezes are anticipated each night, even in lower western Nevada valleys starting Thursday night. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect sensitive plants, wrap exposed irrigation systems, and ensure the safety of vulnerable populations and pets.

As the region braces for the wintry weather, South Lake Tahoe gears up for a bustling April filled with spring events amidst the snowy backdrop.
