El Dorado Hills (March 12, 2024) – In a moment of triumph for Oakridge High School, their esteemed alumna Sophia Wiard has ascended to the pinnacle of collegiate basketball glory at the University of Toledo in women’s basketball. Today, the resounding declaration rang loud and clear across the MAC (Mid-American Conference) as Wiard was crowned the MAC Player of the Year.
Wiard, a luminary in the realm of women’s basketball, has etched her name in the annals of sporting greatness with this prestigious accolade. The Oakridge High School alum knows how to score the basketball better than anyone in the history of the Toledo women’s basketball program.
On a Wednesday night in February, the Rockets senior poured in 40 points against Kent State. She is the first player in Toledo women’s basketball history to record two games scoring 40 points or more. Wiard also set the single-game school record with 42 points scored in a game.
The Toledo women’s basketball sensation has left an indelible mark on the court this season, averaging an impressive 14.9 points per game. Such stellar performance has not only solidified her status as a standout player but has also propelled her team, the Rockets, to a commendable record of 25 wins against a mere 4 losses.
Moreover, Wiard’s impact transcends mere statistics. It is really no surprise to anyone who watched her hoop at Oakridge. As a Senior she Averaged 25.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3.8 steals per game. She shot 55 percent from floor, including 43 percent from three-point land, and 78 percent from free throw line according to the Associated Press
