EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Flood Watch for Diamond Springs and surrounding areas of El Dorado County from 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 through 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26 due to an extended series of atmospheric river storms expected during the Christmas week.
Moderate to heavy rainfall over multiple days could push area creeks, streams and rivers toward bankfull, especially in low-lying locations and urban zones with poor drainage, forecasters say. “Excessive runoff will result in rises along area rivers, creeks and streams. Small streams and creeks may rise out of their banks,” according to the National Weather Service flood statement.
This prolonged wet pattern is tied to a series of warm atmospheric rivers — long corridors of tropical moisture — aimed at Northern California that meteorologists say could bring near-record rain totals in short order. Recent forecast discussions highlight the risk of localized flooding, especially in foothill and valley zones, as rain persists through the week.
Local officials and emergency managers urge residents in El Dorado County to monitor later forecasts, prepare for Flood Warnings, and exercise caution around flood-prone areas. Those living near creeks or in low-lying neighborhoods should consider protective measures and avoid driving through standing water. “Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop,” the advisory states.
The extended forecast for the Motherlode region calls for showers and periods of rain through at least Friday, with cooler temperatures in the mid-40s to upper-50s and consistent southerly winds that could enhance runoff in saturated soils.
