STRAWBERRY, Calif. — A head-on collision on U.S. Highway 50 in the rural Sierra stretch near Strawberry triggered a swift emergency response Monday morning, leaving two vehicles wrecked and traffic disrupted in both directions.

The crash was reported at approximately 8:50 a.m. on June 9, in front of the Strawberry Store between 17212 and 17521 Highway 50, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) dispatch records. Witnesses described a violent two-vehicle collision involving a blue compact sedan and a black SUV.

Emergency medical services were dispatched immediately. The Camino Fire Department responded to the scene, and tow services were provided by AC Towing and Welcome’s Towing to remove the damaged vehicles from the narrow mountain corridor.

The condition of the drivers and any passengers remains unknown at this time, and no fatalities have been confirmed. The CHP has not yet released names or the number of people involved. Officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road.

In this area near Strawberry, the road narrows and winds along steep terrain with few safe passing zones.

“Drivers need to remember that even in good weather, this portion of Highway 50 can be treacherous,”

said a CHP spokesperson in a brief statement.

“We are still gathering facts, and we urge anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.”

No timeline was given for the completion of the investigation. Authorities are asking drivers to slow down, especially in rural and mountain areas where conditions can change rapidly and shoulders are limited.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
