EL DORADO COUNTY — Nov. 8, 2025

A serious traffic incident has prompted a public appeal for information by a local father after his son suffered severe injuries under unclear circumstances on the treacherous stretch of North Shingle Road.

  • On Wednesday, Nov. 5 at approximately 5:10 p.m., the 19-year-old driver was heading northbound on North Shingle Road climbing from U.S. Route 50 toward the Green Valley Road light.

  • The young man was in a passing-allowed zone when he attempted to overtake a white pickup truck. According to the father’s account, the truck accelerated to prevent the maneuver and then moved into the on-coming traffic lane to block the pass.

  • Rain was falling at the time, and the father acknowledges his son was likely driving too fast and following too closely.

  • The driver lost control when he braked in response to the pickup’s maneuver, slid sideways, left the roadway and collided with an oak tree.

  • His Apple Watch or phone detected the collision and alerted emergency services. He was unconscious at the scene and his seatbelt had been cut by a witness who extracted him from the vehicle.

  • The father says law-enforcement is already involved but the family prefers not to escalate further; instead they seek anyone who may have captured the truck’s actions on dash-cam.

  • “Whoever you are — thank you,” the father wrote. “I hope you see this post … I would very much like to meet you.”

  • He added: “I hope nobody ever decides to ‘teach’ your child a lesson when they do stupid things while driving.”

North Shingle Road is a winding mountain route that sees numerous passing-zone maneuvers and challenging conditions, particularly in inclement weather. This collision serves as a vivid reminder of the risk inherent in overtaking on narrow, curved roadways — especially when visibility and surface grip are compromised by rain. The father’s account suggests driver behavior (speed, proximity to the vehicle ahead) combined with aggressive blocking by another motorist created the conditions for a serious crash.

  • The injured driver and his family: The father’s public plea indicates they are seeking closure and accountability, while also calling for caution and community vigilance.

  • The unidentified pickup driver: According to the family’s narrative, this motorist’s actions were central to the crash dynamic — specifically blocking an overtaking attempt and moving into on-coming lanes.

  • Other motorists and community: Residents of El Dorado County who use the Divide and similar routes will likely pay attention to this narrative, potentially altering their driving behavior.

  • Public safety agencies: Local law-enforcement and road-safety authorities may use this incident in advocating safe passing practices under wet-weather and two-lane road conditions.

“When he got to the passing-allowed zone before the light at Green Valley Rd … the pickup truck sped up to prevent him from passing,” the father wrote in his public online post. “Instead of backing off my son kept trying… I hope nobody ever decides to ‘teach’ your child a lesson when they do stupid things while driving.”

What Comes Next

The family is appealing to the public: If you were driving in the area around 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday near the Green Valley Road light along North Shingle Road and you captured dash-cam or mobile footage of the white pickup truck or the events preceding the crash, please contact the family or local authorities. Though the father says he has no interest in further law-enforcement involvement beyond what’s already underway, the footage may help clarify what occurred and assist in any investigation or insurance process.

Additionally, communities familiar with the Divide are being urged to revisit safe-passing protocols in adverse conditions — slowing in wet weather, allowing extra stopping distance, avoiding overtaking when not completely sure of safety, and remaining prepared for unexpectedly aggressive behavior by other drivers.

Local Advisory

Motorists in El Dorado County who travel North Shingle Road or other two-lane mountain routes should:

  • Slow down significantly in rain or slick conditions.

  • Increase following distance, especially approaching passing-zones.

  • Only attempt overtaking if you have a clear view and safe margin; if another driver escalates or blocks you, abandon the attempt.

  • Consider dash-cams for added safety and evidence in the event of an incident.

  • Report any aggressive blocking or dangerous maneuvers to local authorities.
