A person died Saturday morning during a water rescue operation near the Rock Creek Bridge swimming pools in El Dorado County, according to the Mosquito Fire Protection District. Authorities said the victim’s body was recovered despite rescue efforts by multiple agencies. A dog involved in the incident was reported safe.

Emergency crews responded to the popular swimming area off Rock Creek Road on May 2 after reports of a water emergency beneath the bridge. The incident prompted a multi-agency response involving the Mosquito Fire Protection District, El Dorado County Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE Amador-El Dorado Unit, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Rock Creek Road was temporarily closed for approximately two hours while crews conducted search and recovery operations. Authorities have not publicly released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.

In a public statement following the incident, the Mosquito Fire Protection District warned residents about the hidden dangers at the swimming pools beneath Rock Creek Bridge, particularly a low-head dam hydraulic located in the main pool.

“The main pool contains a low-head dam hydraulic that creates a powerful ‘washing machine’ effect, making it very difficult to escape once caught in it,” the district stated.

Low-head dams are known among rescue personnel as especially hazardous because circulating currents can repeatedly pull swimmers underwater, even in areas that appear calm from the surface.

The Rock Creek swimming area remains a popular destination during warmer months, drawing visitors from across El Dorado County and the Sacramento region. Emergency responders urged the public to use caution around fast-moving water and submerged hazards as spring runoff increases river and creek flows throughout the Sierra foothills.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit maintains specialized swift-water rescue teams trained for incidents involving rivers, creeks, and hazardous water conditions.

Officials have not indicated whether drugs, alcohol, or other factors contributed to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
