PLACERVILLE, Calif. —

The annual El Dorado Rose Ball, a hallmark celebration of heritage and volunteerism in Placerville, will return Saturday, May 16, 2026, offering the public its first glimpse of candidates competing for the prestigious title of El Dorado Rose.

Hosted at the American Legion Post #119, the event serves as the formal debut for women aged 60 and older who have spent years contributing to the community through volunteer service. The Rose Ball is widely regarded as one of the county’s most unique traditions—blending local history, civic pride and recognition of lifetime achievement.

“This program honors the women who built and sustained our community through decades of service,” organizers

with the El Dorado Rose Corporation said in a public statement.

“It’s not just a title—it’s a tribute.”

A Tradition Rooted in History

Established in 1976 by the El Dorado County Fair Special Events Committee, with the first Rose Ball held in 1980, the program has gained local, state and national recognition for its focus on honoring mature women rather than youth-oriented pageantry.

Candidates must meet strict eligibility requirements, including being at least 60 years old, residing in El Dorado County for a minimum of 10 years, and demonstrating a substantial record of volunteerism. Each candidate is nominated and sponsored by a local business, organization or individual.

The Grand Promenade and Public Introduction

A centerpiece of the evening is the Grand Promenade, where candidates appear in elaborate historical attire reflecting styles from 1849 to 1910—an homage to the Gold Rush era that shaped the region.

The gowns, often consisting of layered petticoats, corsets and intricate accessories, are judged for historical accuracy, craftsmanship and overall presentation. Some candidates spend months preparing their wardrobes, while others rely on the program’s “Vintage Closet,” which provides period-appropriate garments.

The event also includes dinner, dancing, a silent auction and door prizes, creating a festive atmosphere that doubles as a key step in the selection process. It allows residents to meet and engage with the women who may soon represent the county.

More Than a Title

The woman selected as El Dorado Rose serves as the county’s official ambassador for one year, attending civic functions such as parades, ribbon cuttings and the annual Christmas tree lighting in Placerville.

Despite the public introduction in May, the final selection remains confidential until opening night of the El Dorado County Fair in June, where the winner is formally announced.

Call for 2026–27 Candidates

Organizers are actively seeking candidates for the 2026–27 title, with a nomination deadline of April 1. Applications must be submitted by a sponsor and include documentation of the candidate’s volunteer history.

The pageant itself will take place June 18 during the county fair. Winners receive a permanent trophy, while sponsors are awarded a traveling trophy to display for one year.

Event organizers emphasize that community participation is essential to sustaining the tradition.

“This is truly a community-driven program,”

the organization noted.

“We encourage anyone who knows a deserving woman to step forward and sponsor her.”

Applications can be obtained by contacting the El Dorado Rose Corporation at (530) 845-2513 or by mail at P.O. Box 282, Placerville, CA 95667.
