Multiple Wolf Sightings Near Lake Tahoe Prompt Wildlife Investigation

Wolf known as OR-7

El Dorado County (Oct 9, 2024) – In recent weeks, a flurry of wolf sightings near Lake Tahoe has sparked public intrigue and prompted a formal investigation by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Several reports from the Hope Valley area, just south of Lake Tahoe, have described multiple wolves, with one account detailing a pack of four. The sightings have raised curiosity and concern, as the area has seen limited wolf activity in recent history.

Peter Tira, a spokesperson for CDFW, confirmed that the reports have been submitted to their wolf program and officials overseeing the North Central Region, which includes both Alpine and El Dorado counties. While no official confirmation of wolves in the area has yet been made, CDFW has taken the reports seriously. Wildlife officers have set up cameras in the region and are closely monitoring the area for any signs of wolf presence.

“Rumors are flying, and we are doing our best to keep officials in El Dorado and Alpine County updated on our efforts,” Tira shared in an email. The department is urging locals and visitors to report any further sightings or evidence, including tracks or scat, to help with their investigation.

The gray wolf is a protected species under both state and federal endangered species laws. Historically, wolves roamed across vast parts of California, including the Sierra Nevada. However, by the 1920s, they had disappeared from the state. In 2011, the first documented return of a wolf to California occurred when a male wolf, known as OR-7, ventured from Oregon into Northern California. Since then, several packs have established themselves in the northern reaches of the state, though none have been confirmed as far south as Hope Valley.

If proven, these sightings would mark the first significant wolf activity in Alpine and El Dorado counties since 2021, when a lone wolf named OR-93 traveled through the Sierra Nevada before tragically being struck by a vehicle in Kern County.

While the investigation continues, CDFW encourages anyone with potential wolf evidence to report it through their official wolf program.
