A two-member ski rescue team departed from Christmas Valley at approximately 7:30 p.m., ascending the Warr Trail to reach the subject. The El Dorado County Sheriff’s rescue helicopter, Echo 1, assisted by confirming the individual’s location during a flyover. The rescue team reached the subject around 10 p.m., providing hot chocolate, water, a headlamp, and additional warm clothing. They then guided the individual back to Christmas Valley. The mission concluded after midnight, with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office providing transportation back to the individual’s hotel.

This incident underscores the critical importance of proper preparation for backcountry excursions. Venturing into such areas without adequate navigation tools and survival gear can lead to perilous situations. In this case, the individual was fortunate to have cell phone coverage and sufficient battery life to call for help. Even experienced riders can encounter unforeseen challenges; therefore, it is imperative to stay with companions and have contingency plans. While EDSAR is dedicated to assisting those in need, rescues are time-consuming and resource-intensive.
