Records from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control show that Crystal Basin Cellars has filed an application to open a location at 2850 Cold Springs Road in Placerville. The application was submitted Jan. 22, 2026, and is currently pending state approval.

A member of the winery’s team confirmed that a Placerville location is in development but said final details are still being worked out. “We’re working out some details,” the team member said when reached for confirmation.

Founded from a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1980, the operation moved into commercial production in 2000 under the direction of Mike and Melissa Owen. In 2006, the winery relocated to its current property in Camino, where an approximately 80-year-old agricultural structure — previously used as a pear barn, cider house, and apple barn — was converted into what the business calls its “grape barn.”

Today, the winery produces vintages made exclusively from grapes grown within a 30-mile radius across El Dorado County. Vineyard elevations range from roughly 600 feet to 3,400 feet, reflecting the county’s varied growing conditions. According to the company’s published history and competition listings, its wines have earned multiple gold medals at major judging events.

In addition to standard tastings, the winery regularly hosts themed events and seasonal gatherings, including crab feeds and oyster festivals.

The business currently operates two tasting rooms: its primary winery site on Carson Road in Camino’s Apple Hill area and a second tasting room, Crystal Basin Station, on Sutter Street in Folsom.

State regulators review license applications for completeness, zoning compliance and public notice before granting approval. No opening timeline has been posted for the proposed Placerville site.
