CAMINO, Calif. — A violent confrontation in the Camino foothills Thursday morning left two El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies, a PG&E contract worker and the suspected gunman wounded after a utility crew reported being fired upon from a nearby home.

The incident unfolded shortly after 7:25 a.m. Thursday, March 12, when a Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) crew working to replace a utility pole on Mountain View Drive reported shots being fired from a residence nearby.

According to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, one PG&E contract worker was struck during the initial encounter. The injured worker, a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1245, suffered injuries authorities described as non-life-threatening.

Deputies responding to the scene encountered an armed suspect barricaded inside the residence, prompting a large law enforcement response.

Hours-Long Standoff

Sheriff’s deputies and a SWAT team spent more than three hours attempting to make contact with the suspect and de-escalate the situation.

Authorities said the standoff lasted from approximately 7:30 a.m. until shortly before 11:25 a.m.

At about 11:25 a.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred during the confrontation.

During the exchange of gunfire, two deputies and the suspect were shot, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

All four individuals — the two deputies, the PG&E worker and the suspect — were transported to area hospitals.

“The deputies were taken to a local hospital and are currently in stable condition,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said in an afternoon statement.

Injuries and Current Status

Authorities confirmed the following conditions Thursday afternoon:

  • Two Deputies: Both are hospitalized and reported in stable condition.

  • PG&E Contract Worker: Suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

  • Suspect: Airlifted by helicopter to a regional hospital; his medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

Investigators say the delay is typical during officer-involved shooting investigations while authorities verify details and notify next of kin if necessary.

Investigation Underway

The shooting triggered a critical incident investigation, a protocol that typically involves multiple agencies and oversight from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.

Authorities maintained a significant presence on Mountain View Drive Thursday afternoon as investigators documented the scene and gathered evidence.

Officials say additional information, including the identities of those involved, may be released once the investigation progresses.

Residents seeking updates were directed to the Sheriff’s Office official communications channels, including its public social media updates.
